Welcome to the King Valley
This year we’ve been living in Oxley, a little neighbourhood about 15 minutes from Wangaratta. Just down the road from our place is where we’ll be getting married.
We’re not exactly experts, but here are some of our favourite local spots in Oxley and surrounds.
For everyone
Restaurants, Cafes and Bars
Cafe Prevue in Wangaratta isn’t bad for a fancy brunch. There’s also the Aroma Deli Cafe, where you can pick up some delicious deli fare as well as foccacias and sangas and other yummy Italian stuff.
The Milawa Kitchen has delicious pies, sausage rolls and fresh bread. While you’re there, head next door for a free cheese tasting at the Milawa Cheese Company. If it’s a nice day, you can borrow a picnic rug from the venue and enjoy lunch on the lawn.
King River Cafe in Oxley is extremely popular for lunch and dinner. They use local ingredients, and the cheese and hors d’oeuvres platter is particularly good. You might need to book as it gets busy!
Pedal Slowly is a small brewery/bar in Wangaratta. Great beer and cosy vibes.
Wineries and Breweries
There are stacks of wineries around to keep you busy. We’ve only been a to a few so it’s probably worth a quick Google/Bing/Yahoo/Ask Jeeves to find one that’s open and suits you.
The Bridge Road Brewery (Beechworth), Bright Brewery, and King River Brewery are great, if you’re up for a drive. Table tennis and cornhole at KRB if that floats your boat, as it does mine. Great pizza at all three.
For one weekend only
Events
The famous Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues will be on the same weekend as our festivities! Lineup to be released soon. Check out the website for more info.
The Oxley Bush Market runs once a year at the Oxley Shire Hall. Apparently it’s BIG, and it just happens to be on the same day as our wedding, so why not check it out before the party? We will upload more information here once it’s available.
For kids
Playgrounds
We’ve heard that the Splash Park/Water Play Park in Wangaratta is a very fun time on a hot day. It’s free! There’s also a regular playground next door.
In Oscar’s opinion, the best playground in Wangaratta has to be in Apex Park, on the river. There’s stuff for big and little kids, and even a parkour section.
Adventures
If you’re into a family bike ride, we’re told there are loads of trails around the place to explore. More info here.
Lenny’s favourite place in Wangaratta is the Northern Beaches - a nice, easy round walking track surrounded by bushland with a couple of swimming spots on the Ovens river (for dogs and humans alike!)
